How to Reset a VW Polo Service Light

The exact reset procedure depends on the Polo generation, model year, and dashboard type. The methods below cover most VW Polo models.

Important: Resetting the service light only clears the maintenance reminder. It does not replace the actual service work. Make sure the required maintenance (such as oil and filter replacement) has been completed before resetting.

Method 1: Older VW Polo Models (9N / Early 6R)

Applicable models: Polo 9N (2002–2009) and some early Polo 6R models.

  1. Switch off the ignition completely.
  2. Press and hold the right-side dashboard button (usually marked 0.0 or SET).
  3. While holding the button, turn the ignition ON (do not start the engine).
  4. Release the button.
  5. Press the left-side dashboard button or turn the clock adjustment button, depending on the dashboard type.
  6. Switch the ignition OFF and turn it ON again to confirm.

If successful, the SERVICE / INSP message or spanner symbol will disappear.

Method 2: VW Polo 6R (Approx. 2009–2017)

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Press and hold the 0.0 / SET button on the instrument cluster.
  3. Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
  4. Release the button.
  5. Press the left-side button briefly (clock adjustment button).
  6. Turn the ignition OFF, then restart the vehicle.

The service reminder should now be reset.

Method 3: Polo Models with Multi-Function Display (6C / Newer Models)

Some Polo models allow the reset through the vehicle menu:

CAR → Settings → Service → Reset Oil Service

or:

Vehicle Settings → Service Interval → Reset

Confirm the reset operation when prompted.

Method 4: Reset Using Diagnostic Equipment

For newer Polo models, especially Polo AW (2017+), or when manual reset does not work, use diagnostic tools such as VCDS, OBDeleven, or VW factory diagnostic equipment.

Typical procedure:

17 - Instruments → Adaptation → Service Interval Reset → Reset Oil Service / Inspection Service

Some vehicles may require the service interval to be configured again:

  • Fixed Service: 15,000 km or 1 year
  • LongLife Service: Up to 30,000 km or 2 years

Common Reset Problems

1. Oil service reset but inspection reminder remains
VW Polo normally has two separate service counters:

  • Oil Service
  • Inspection Service

Both may need to be reset.

2. Incorrect button sequence
The correct sequence is:

Hold button → Switch ignition ON → Release button → Press second button

Do not switch the ignition on before holding the button.

3. Reset still unsuccessful
Possible reasons:

  • Incorrect procedure for the specific Polo generation
  • Service interval settings are locked
  • Diagnostic equipment is required

VW Polo Model Reference

Model Typical Reset Method
Polo 9N (2002–2009) Two-button dashboard reset
Polo 6R (2009–2017) 0.0 / SET button + left button
Polo 6C (2014–2017) Vehicle menu or diagnostic tool
Polo AW (2017+) Infotainment menu / OBDeleven / VCDS

For an exact procedure, provide your Polo year, engine type, and dashboard type (with or without steering-wheel buttons/display), and the correct steps can be identified.
