How to Reset VW Tiguan Electronic Parking Brake

There is no universal “reset button” for the VW Tiguan electronic parking brake. Use the procedure matching your situation.

Simple operational reset

1. Park on level ground, select P, and keep your foot firmly on the brake.
2. Switch the ignition on or start the engine.
3. Close the driver’s door.
4. Pull the parking-brake switch to apply it.
5. Push the switch down to release it.
6. Switch the vehicle off, restart it, and repeat once.

If the warning disappears and the brake applies/releases normally, it was likely a temporary interruption.

Older Tiguan switch synchronization

VW issued this procedure specifically for vehicles showing diagnostic code 03200 or 16352:

1. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN.
2. Press and hold the electronic parking-brake switch.
3. While holding it, turn the ignition off and then back to ON/RUN.
4. Release the switch.

This is not a general procedure for every model year. It comes from a Volkswagen technical bulletin.

After replacing rear brake pads

The EPB must be initialized with a VW-capable scan tool such as VCDS, ODIS, or an appropriate OBDeleven function. Do not force or manually wind back the electric actuators.

On first-generation 5N Tiguans, the documented VCDS process uses:

• 53 – Parking Brake
• Basic Setting 006 to close the brakes
• Basic Setting 010 for the function test
• Wait at least 30 seconds after each motor operation

The pads, calipers, and rotors must be fully installed before closing or function-testing the brake. See the Ross-Tech Tiguan 5N procedure. Later Tiguans use different ABS-module procedures, so confirm the model year before selecting a basic setting.

If a red brake warning remains on, the brake will not release, or ABS/ESC warnings appear, stop driving and have the ABS/parking-brake modules scanned.
