- Check the battery.
Remove the emergency key and open the key-fob cover. Replace the battery with the correct type shown inside the key fob or in the owner’s manual.
- Check the battery position.
Make sure the positive and negative sides of the battery are installed correctly. Close the key-fob cover securely.
- Reactivate the key.
Press any button on the key fob. On many Mercedes-Benz SmartKeys, this reactivates the key after its functions have been switched off.
- Test the remote.
Stand close to the vehicle and press the Lock and Unlock buttons. Wait a few seconds between each attempt.
- Start the vehicle.
If the vehicle does not detect the key, place the key in the designated key-detection area, usually inside the center console or near the start button, and try starting the vehicle again.
- Try the spare key.
If the spare key works, the original key fob may have a battery, internal circuit, or programming problem.
- Get professional assistance.
If the key still does not work, contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz service center or a qualified automotive locksmith. Replacement keys and immobilizer programming normally require specialist equipment.
Important: Do not use an online reset sequence unless it is confirmed for your exact Mercedes-Benz model and year.
