How to Reset Mercedes Ignition System: If your Mercedes-Benz has ignition issues or you're trying to reset it after repairs, follow these steps. This method applies to most Mercedes models with key fob or SmartKey systems.
Step 1: Insert the Key
Insert your key into the ignition slot. If your car uses a push-start system, insert the key fob into its socket or make sure it’s inside the vehicle.
Step 2: Turn the Key to Position II
Turn the key to position II (the dashboard lights should come on, but the engine is not running). If using a Start/Stop button, press it once without pressing the brake pedal. Wait 10 seconds.
Step 3: Press the Gas Pedal
How do I reset my Mercedes ignition: With the ignition in position II, press the gas pedal all the way down and hold it for 10 seconds. This allows the throttle position sensor to reset.
Step 4: Turn Off the Ignition
After 10 seconds, release the gas pedal. Turn the key back to position 0 (OFF) and remove it. If using push start, press the button again to switch off the system.
Step 5: Wait for a Minute
Wait at least 60 seconds before starting the vehicle again. This gives time for the system to fully reset.
Step 6: Start the Engine
Now start your Mercedes normally. The ignition system should now be reset. If issues persist, it may indicate a deeper electrical or ECU-related fault.
Notes:
-
This reset does not clear diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Use a scan tool for that.
-
For newer models with fully electronic key modules, resets may require STAR diagnostic tools at a dealership.
