SRS Airbag System Malfunction – Diagnostic, Repair & Reset Guide

System Overview: The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) controls the vehicle’s airbags, seat belt pretensioners, impact sensors, and SRS control module. When the SRS warning light appears or the message “SRS Airbag System Malfunction” is displayed, the system has detected an abnormal signal, communication error, or component failure. In this condition, the airbags or seat belt pretensioners may not operate correctly during a collision.

Common Causes of SRS Malfunction: 1. Low battery voltage or unstable power supply: A weak battery, voltage drop during engine start, or battery replacement without proper initialization may trigger an SRS fault. 2. Loose or damaged SRS connectors: Poor contact, corrosion, or wiring damage under the seats, dashboard, or steering column can interrupt communication with SRS components. 3. Faulty airbag clock spring: The steering wheel clock spring transfers electrical signals between the rotating steering wheel and the SRS control system. Internal damage can cause an airbag warning light. 4. Seat belt pretensioner or buckle sensor failure: Faulty seat belt sensors or pretensioners can cause the SRS module to detect a safety system error. 5. Defective impact sensors: Crash sensors located around the vehicle may provide incorrect signals due to damage or internal failure. 6. SRS control module error: The airbag ECU may store permanent fault codes after a collision, voltage interruption, or internal malfunction.

Professional Diagnostic Procedure: 1. Connect a professional diagnostic scanner that supports SRS/Airbag systems. 2. Read the stored fault codes from the SRS control module and record the error information before clearing. 3. Check the fault code description to identify the affected component or circuit. 4. Inspect related wiring harnesses, connectors, ground points, and power supply circuits. 5. Test individual SRS components according to manufacturer specifications. 6. Repair or replace defective parts before attempting system reset.

SRS Airbag Reset Procedure: 1. Turn off the ignition switch and remove the vehicle key. 2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal and wait at least 10–15 minutes to allow the SRS backup power supply to discharge completely. 3. Inspect and reconnect all related SRS connectors if necessary. 4. Reconnect the battery terminal and switch the ignition ON. 5. Connect an SRS-compatible diagnostic scanner and enter the airbag control module. 6. Clear all stored SRS fault codes after confirming the original fault has been repaired. 7. Turn the ignition OFF, restart the vehicle, and verify that the SRS warning light performs the normal self-check and turns off. 8. Perform a final system scan to confirm no current or stored SRS faults remain.

Important Safety Notice: The SRS system contains explosive components such as airbags and pyrotechnic seat belt pretensioners. Never test airbag circuits with a standard multimeter or apply external power to SRS components. Always disconnect the battery before handling SRS connectors. If the warning light returns after reset, the fault has not been resolved and further diagnosis is required.
