Reset BMW TPMS: Introduction & Procedure

TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) reset allows the vehicle to relearn the current tire pressure values after tire inflation, tire rotation, wheel replacement, or pressure adjustment. It does not repair tire pressure issues; it only recalibrates the system based on the current tire conditions.

Before Resetting TPMS:
Make sure all tires are properly inflated according to the recommended pressure label located on the driver’s door frame or fuel filler flap. Check and adjust tire pressure when the tires are cold.

TPMS Reset Procedure (BMW with iDrive):

  1. Turn on the vehicle ignition by pressing the Start/Stop button without starting the engine.
  2. Enter the iDrive menu: CAR → Vehicle Status → Tire Pressure Monitor.
  3. Select Perform Reset / Reset Tire Pressure Monitor and confirm.
  4. The system will begin initialization and display a reset status.
  5. Drive the vehicle normally for approximately 10–20 minutes (usually above 30 km/h) to allow the system to relearn the tire pressure values.
  6. Once completed, the TPMS status will show normal readings or a green OK indication.

After Tire or Wheel Replacement:
If new wheels or TPMS sensors are installed, ensure the sensors are compatible and programmed correctly before performing the reset. If the vehicle still shows a warning after reset, check tire pressure, inspect for leaks, and verify TPMS sensor operation.

Common Reasons for TPMS Reset:

  • Tire pressure adjustment
  • Seasonal tire changes
  • Tire rotation
  • Wheel replacement
  • After repairing a puncture or air leak

Important Notes:
TPMS reset should always be performed after correcting tire pressure. Resetting the system while tire pressure is incorrect may cause inaccurate monitoring.
