How to Reset Brake Light on BMW & Multiple Methods

Make sure the brake pads and wear sensor have already been replaced. Resetting the light without fixing worn parts will cause the warning to return.

Method 1: Reset via instrument cluster (most BMW models)
Sit in the driver’s seat and close all doors. Press the Start/Stop button once without pressing the brake pedal to turn ignition on. Press and hold the odometer reset button on the dashboard until the service menu appears. Release the button, then press it again briefly to scroll until “Front Brakes” or “Rear Brakes” is shown. Press and hold the button until “Reset?” appears, then hold again to confirm. The display will show a reset progress message and then the new mileage interval.

Method 2: Reset using iDrive (newer BMW models)
Turn ignition on without starting the engine. Go to Vehicle Info → Vehicle Status → Service Requirements. Select Front Brakes or Rear Brakes. Choose Reset and confirm. Wait until the reset completes.

Method 3: Reset with an OBD diagnostic tool (recommended if reset fails)
Plug a BMW-compatible OBD scanner into the OBD port under the dashboard. Turn ignition on. Select the brake service reset function in the scanner menu and follow on-screen prompts. This method works well when the instrument reset is locked.

Common reasons the brake light won’t reset
Brake pad wear sensor not replaced or installed incorrectly. Low brake fluid level. Fault codes stored in the ABS/DSC module. Aftermarket pads without a new sensor.

Safety tips
Always replace the brake wear sensor with new pads. Check brake fluid level before resetting. If the warning remains after reset, scan for fault codes to avoid braking system issues.
