How to Program BMW Garage Door Opener

BMWs typically use three HomeLink buttons on the underside of the rearview mirror.

  1. Park outside the garage, keep the doorway clear, and switch the ignition/accessory power on.
  2. Program BMW Garage Door Opener: If setting up HomeLink for the first time, hold the two outer mirror buttons until the indicator flashes rapidly—about 10 seconds.
This erases all previously programmed buttons.
  3. Hold the handheld garage remote about 1–3 inches (3–7 cm) from the mirror buttons.
  4. Simultaneously hold:
    • The BMW HomeLink button you want to program, and
    • The garage remote’s open/close button.
  5. Release both when the BMW indicator changes from slow flashing to solid or rapid flashing.
  6. Press the programmed BMW button to test it.

If the indicator rapidly flashes but the door doesn’t move, your opener likely uses a rolling code:

  1. Locate the Learn/Smart/Program button on the garage-door motor.
  2. Press and release it.
  3. Within about 20 seconds, return to the BMW and press-and-release the programmed HomeLink button.
  4. Repeat the press-and-release up to three times.

For model-specific instructions, use the BMW HomeLink programming page or enter your VIN in the BMW Digital Owner’s Manual. Older BMWs and certain Genie/Sommer openers may require a slightly different procedure.
