BMW X5 Parking Brake Malfunction Reset: 4 Steps

First, identify the cause of the malfunction. Common reasons include a weak battery (below 12V), worn brake pads not reset after replacement, a stuck electric parking brake (EPB) motor, or software glitches in the EMF control unit.

Preparation: Park the vehicle on a flat surface, ensure it’s in “Park,” and switch the ignition to “ON” (engine off). Make sure the battery is fully charged, as low voltage can trigger the malfunction.

Soft Reset Steps: 1. Sit in the driver’s seat and press the start/stop button without starting the engine. 2. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly. 3. While pressing the brake, push and hold the parking brake switch down for about 5–10 seconds, then release. 4. Pull the switch up to engage the parking brake again. 5. Start the engine and check the dashboard — the “Parking Brake Malfunction” warning should disappear.

If the warning persists, perform a system reset through iDrive: go to Vehicle Info → Vehicle Status → Check Control Messages → Parking Brake → Reset/Initialize. Follow the on-screen instructions.

For stubborn faults, try a hard reset: turn off the car, disconnect the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes, reconnect it, then restart the car and test the parking brake.

If the error remains, inspect the EPB actuator motor, wiring harness, and caliper mechanism for damage or corrosion. Ensure brake pad wear sensors are properly installed. A diagnostic scan using tools like ISTA, Autel, or Launch X431 can access the EMF module to “Initialize Parking Brake” or “Clear Fault Memory,” which often resolves the issue completely.

Tips: Always ensure proper voltage before resetting. If the EPB motor or control unit is faulty, software resets won’t help — replacement or reprogramming will be required.
