If your BMW displays the "Service Engine Soon" light, it usually means the vehicle needs maintenance or there's a minor issue detected by the onboard diagnostics system. After fixing the issue or performing service, you can reset the light using the steps below.
1. Turn On the Ignition Without Starting the Engine
Insert your key (or press the start button without your foot on the brake) to turn on the ignition. All dashboard lights should illuminate.
2. Locate the Odometer Button
Find the small button near the odometer or on the instrument cluster.
3. Press and Hold the Odometer Button
Hold the button until the service menu appears on the display. This may take around 10–15 seconds.
4. Navigate the Service Menu
Use short presses to scroll through the menu items (such as oil reset, brake fluid, vehicle check, etc.) until you reach the item you want to reset—usually shown with a triangle and mileage info.
5. Reset the Service Light
When the desired service item is selected, press and hold the button again. A prompt like “Reset?” will appear. Release and hold the button again to confirm. Wait until “Reset Successful” or a check mark appears.
6. Turn Off the Ignition
Switch the ignition off completely. Turn the engine on to verify that the "Service Engine Soon" light is no longer displayed.
Note:
-
BMW Service Engine Soon Light Reset: This method works on most BMWs from the early 2000s up to recent models.
-
For newer models with iDrive, the reset can also be done via the iDrive system under Vehicle Status > Service Requirements.
If the light doesn’t reset or returns quickly, it may indicate an unresolved issue. Use a diagnostic scanner (OBD-II) for further troubleshooting.
