BMW Passenger Restraint System Malfunction

Passenger restraint system malfunction means there is a fault involving the passenger airbag, seat occupancy sensor, seat-belt buckle, or belt tensioner. The affected restraint components may not work correctly in a crash.

Recommended repair process

1. Do not use the front passenger seat
   Keep wearing seat belts, but do not assume the passenger airbag is operational. If the vehicle was involved in a collision, suffered water damage, or shows multiple electrical faults, have it towed for inspection.
2. Read the SRS/ACSM fault codes
   Use BMW ISTA or a BMW-capable scanner that can access the ACSM/MRS airbag module. A basic engine OBD scanner usually cannot diagnose this system. Do not erase the codes before diagnosis.
3. Repair according to the fault code
   • Passenger occupancy/OCS sensor: Replace the seat sensor mat or occupancy-detection module, then perform calibration with ISTA.
   • BMW Passenger Restraint System Malfunction: Connector or wiring under the seat: Inspect the yellow SRS connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage caused by seat movement.
   • Seat-belt buckle or tensioner: Replace the faulty buckle, pretensioner, or damaged wiring.
   • Low battery voltage: Charge and load-test the battery. A replacement BMW battery normally needs to be registered.
   • ACSM module/software fault: Check power and ground, update/program the module, or replace it if necessary.
   • Crash data or deployed components: Replace any deployed airbags and pretensioners and service the control module according to BMW procedures. Clearing the warning alone is not a repair.
4. Clear and verify
   After completing the repair, clear the ACSM codes, restart the vehicle, move the seat through its adjustment range, and confirm that the warning does not return.

You can first remove any objects from the passenger seat and check the belt buckle for debris. Do not unplug yellow airbag connectors, install a resistor bypass, or use an occupancy-sensor emulator. Airbag circuits can deploy unexpectedly, and bypass devices can cause incorrect passenger detection.
