BMW Odometer Reset Button: How to find it

The BMW odometer reset button usually refers to the trip mileage reset button. Its location depends on the vehicle’s model year and instrument cluster.

Traditional or Partially Digital Instrument Cluster

Sit in the driver’s seat and look at the instrument panel above the steering wheel.

The button is usually:

• At the bottom-left corner of the instrument cluster
• Near the 7 o’clock position of the left gauge
• Built into the black trim below the instrument display
• A small black round or rectangular button that may be difficult to see

On some BMW models, it is below the speedometer. On others, it may be close to the fuel gauge.

Pressing it briefly usually changes or resets the trip mileage. Holding it down may open the service reset menu, so do not confirm any service reset unless you know which item you are resetting.

Newer Fully Digital Instrument Cluster

Some newer BMW models with Live Cockpit or iDrive 7, 8, 8.5, or 9 may not have a physical reset button on the instrument cluster.

Depending on the model, you may need to:

• Use the BC button on the end of the turn-signal stalk
• Open the trip data screen using the steering-wheel controls
• Press and hold the steering-wheel scroll wheel
• Go to Vehicle → System Settings → Trip Data → Reset Individual

The reset function only clears the trip mileage or trip data. It cannot reset the vehicle’s total recorded mileage.
