BMW Instrument Cluster Reset: Operating Instructions

“BMW Instrument Cluster Reset” usually refers to resetting the CBS service indicators, such as engine oil, front or rear brake pads, brake fluid, and vehicle inspection.

The exact procedure may vary depending on the model year, chassis, and instrument cluster version. The steps below work for many BMW E-, F-, and G-Series models with a trip odometer reset button.

Resetting the CBS Service Indicator

1. Complete the required maintenance or replace the relevant component.
2. Park the vehicle and close all doors.
3. Do not press the brake or clutch pedal.
4. Press the Start/Stop button once to switch on the ignition without starting the engine.
   For models with a physical key, turn the key to the ignition-on position.
5. Wait until the warning messages on the instrument cluster disappear.
6. Press and hold the trip odometer reset button for approximately 8–12 seconds until the service menu appears.
7. Briefly press the button to scroll through the available service items, such as:
   • Engine Oil
   • Front Brakes
   • Rear Brakes
   • Brake Fluid
   • Vehicle Check
8. When the desired service item is displayed, press and hold the button until “Reset?” or “Reset possible” appears.
9. Release the button, then press and hold it again to confirm.
10. Wait until the display shows “Reset successful”, the progress bar finishes, or a new service date and mileage appear.
11. Switch off the ignition, restart the vehicle, and verify that the warning has cleared.

If the Reset Does Not Work

If the display shows “Reset impossible”, or the service menu does not appear, possible causes include:

• The service item has not reached the allowable reset interval.
• A brake pad wear sensor has not been replaced or the sensor circuit is still open.
• The battery voltage is too low.
• The instrument cluster uses a different reset procedure.
• A CBS or vehicle fault is stored and requires BMW ISTA or a compatible diagnostic scanner.

Do not reset a service warning unless the required maintenance has actually been completed, especially for brake-related items.

Resetting Trip Data

For BMW Operating System 8 or 8.5:

1. Display the trip data on the instrument cluster.
2. Press and hold the button on the end of the left steering-column stalk.

For BMW Operating System 9:

1. Display the trip data.
2. Press and hold the steering-wheel control wheel.

Trip data may also be reset through:

Apps → Vehicle → System Settings → Time Period for Trip Data → Reset Individual

Restarting a Frozen or Black iDrive Screen

If the iDrive screen is frozen or black:

1. Keep the vehicle switched on.
2. Press and hold the audio volume knob for approximately 30 seconds.
3. Release the knob when the screen turns black.
4. Wait for the iDrive system to restart.

This procedure restarts the infotainment system and does not reset the CBS service history.
