Audi engine malfunction light: Causes and What to Do

An Audi engine malfunction light means the vehicle’s computer has detected a problem related to the engine, fuel system, ignition system, emissions system, or certain electronic components. The problem can be minor, but in some cases it can indicate a fault that needs immediate attention.

Audi engine light: Common causes include:

• A loose, damaged, or faulty fuel cap
• Worn spark plugs or faulty ignition coils
• Oxygen sensor or mass airflow (MAF) sensor problems
• Fuel injector or fuel-pressure issues
• Turbocharger or boost-pressure problems
• EGR, catalytic converter, or other emissions-system faults
• Vacuum leaks or intake-system problems
• Low battery voltage, a weak battery, or another electrical fault

What you should do depends on how the warning light appears and how the car is driving.

• Solid yellow/amber engine light: The car can usually still be driven carefully for a short distance. Avoid hard acceleration, high RPM, and long-distance driving. Check whether the fuel cap is properly tightened and arrange a diagnostic inspection as soon as possible.
• Flashing engine light: This is more serious and often indicates an active engine misfire. Continuing to drive may damage the catalytic converter or other engine components. Stop driving as soon as it is safe and arrange roadside assistance or towing.
• Red warning light, overheating, severe vibration, smoke, unusual noises, or major loss of power: Stop the vehicle immediately in a safe place, switch off the engine, and do not continue driving until the car has been inspected.

The most important next step is to read the fault codes with an OBD-II diagnostic scanner. An Audi dealership, repair workshop, or qualified mechanic can scan the vehicle and identify which system is causing the warning. The engine malfunction light itself does not tell you the exact cause, so replacing parts without checking the fault codes is not recommended.

If the car feels normal and the light is solid, the issue may not be an emergency, but it should not be ignored. If the vehicle is shaking, losing power, making unusual noises, or the light is flashing, you should treat it as a more urgent problem.
